SUBLIME VILLA AND GARDENS IN SONOMA, $18M
March 13, 2020
San Francisco-based architect Richard Beard is well known for his ability to create luxurious residential environments, unforgettable places that glance back at the past but are completely ready for today. Here on fifty-seven rugged acres on Sonoma Mountain, he designed a pale yellow, Italian-style villa that wouldn’t be out of place in Umbria.
The clients (an investment banker and a creative director) designed the extensive gardens themselves, and the result is unlike anything else in the wine country– ranging from a walled garden and terraced roses, woodland paths and a Zen garden next to a year-round creek– that give the property a serenely timeless quality.
Below, the house reflected in a lily pond Monet would have killed for.
The house and its grand interior spaces are sheltered by mature hornbeam.
What We Love: Beard’s innate sense of high and low, with tinted polished concrete floors and industrial steel windows tempering a grandly luxurious salon.
The walled garden and creekside pagoda, below. There’s also a barn complex with stables, a seriously palatial chicken coop, plus a caretaker’s residence.
