John Aaroe Announces Retirement

After More Than 40 Years in the Industry, Real Estate Icon John Aaroe Announces His Retirement

SAN FRANCISCO and LOS ANGELES, CA, September 8, 2017 – Pacific Union International, Inc., and John Aaroe Group today announced the retirement of John Aaroe as President of the Los Angeles real estate brokerage. Aaroe will continue to be a shareholder of Pacific Union International, Inc., a role he took when he brokered his firm’s merger with Pacific Union in 2016. The combined company, which now includes LA-based Partners Trust, is California’s largest independent brokerage and ranks seventh in the nation by sales volume.

Pacific Union CEO Mark McLaughlin will assume leadership of the Beverly Hills-based company in partnership with an Executive Team consisting of Sam Kraemer, General Counsel; Heidi Hockenberry, Chief Marketing Officer; and Gus Ruelas, Vice President and Regional Manager.

A Southern California native, Aaroe launched his career in 1975 after graduating from the University of Southern California, joining the elite Jon Douglas organization. He later established its luxury division, leading it to become the largest seller of multimillion-dollar homes in the U.S. He then launched John Aaroe & Associates, the most productive real estate company per sales associate in the country. In 1998, he sold the company to Prudential, subsequently heading and expanding that firm’s Los Angeles operation, John Aaroe Division. In 2009, he launched John Aaroe Group.

Since John Aaroe Group merged with Pacific Union International in December 2016, volume has increased 20% and units 13% year over year. By the end of the first quarter of 2017, the firm had set sales records including a $48 million home on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu’s Carbon Beach and $15 million for a penthouse at The Carlyle on the Wilshire Corridor. Other significant deals included the sale of the Danny Thomas Estate in Beverly Hills at $65 million, the second-highest sale in the City’s history.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to work with John, a major icon who created one of the most respected brands in LA real estate,” says McLaughlin. “When Los Angeles Business Journal honored him last month among its Los Angeles 500: The Most Influential People in Los Angeles, it was just the latest of countless accolades he’s received throughout his remarkable career.”

McLaughlin also cited the outstanding John Aaroe Group Community Foundation for its agentdriven commitment to making life better in the communities it serves. Since John Aaroe started his first charitable foundation in 1997, the foundations have raised $2.7 million for local causes. Last week the foundation reached beyond its home base to send $7,500 to Houston hurricane relief.

Pacific Union International is the largest independent real estate brokerage in California, with 2016 sales volume of $12.61 billion and projected 2017 sales volume in excess of $15 billion. Its recent merger with Los Angeles brokerage Partners Trust, expands the brokerage to 47 offices in California, with more than 1,400 real estate professionals.
