This grand gated mansion sits upon an impressive parcel of land right at the heart of Silicon Valley, surrounded by its own forest park of dramatic redwoods, manicured gardens and versatile entertaining and recreational spaces.
Built in 1987, the mansion is owned by Ken Raasch, the former business partner of the painter Thomas Kinkade, known as the “Painter of Light,” according to listing agent Rick Ardizzone. “Ken Raasch was the marketing wizard and co-founder with Kinkade of the Media Arts Group.”
A seven-year buildout, the property presents an old-world style with its thick walls, stately stonework and grand terraces. Outside, there are many of the perks buyers of the past 18 months have been looking for in a self-contained compound, including fruit trees and vegetable gardens, play areas, sports courts and hiking trails.
The property’s 10.6 acres present a unique opportunity in this part of California. As Mr. Ardizzone points out, “it’s very difficult to find such extensive acreage on one parcel in Silicon Valley, let alone a fenced and secured property that is its own world but still within walking distance from downtown Los Gatos.”
The 9,000-square-foot home has six bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms, with an additional one-bedroom/one-bathroom guest house, and it sits upon approximately 10.6 acres of land.
“Living on this estate is like living in your own park,” Mr. Ardizzone said. The abundantly forested grounds are filled with redwood groves, fruit trees and the stately blue spruce. The 10.6 acres also incorporate a luxurious range of amenities including a tennis court, a swimming pool and spa, a children’s playground, a picnic area and dining terrace, a sprawling lawn, Italianesque garden, and extensive vegetable planter boxes.” There is also garage space for eight cars and a “massive car park” for onsite guest parking, he added.
A 1-acre parcel of land that is part of the property’s 10.6 acres could be utilized to build a second dwelling of about 4,000 or 5,000 square feet. “You’re not limited to auxiliary dwelling size with this potential second house,” he pointed out. “This could be the perfect setup for a multi-generational family who want to live on the same estate.” The property also features a complete one-bedroom guest house with a full kitchen.
The estate is convenient to downtown Los Gatos as well as everything that the financial and intellectual center of Silicon Valley has to offer, while being just 45 minutes from San Francisco and 15 minutes from San Jose International Airport. Los Gatos itself is a small upscale community of less than 40,000 with a charming downtown, an array of boutiques and eateries, and a “quaint village vibe,” according to Mr. Ardizzone. “It’s a retreat from the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley.”
The location is also right at the heart of so much natural beauty and recreational opportunity, lying 1.5 hours from the wine country of Napa Valley, and 20 minutes from the famous coastline and beaches of Northern California, while also being perched just north of a great expanse of mountainous state parks and redwood preserves. For golfers, there are also several country clubs nearby, including Pebble Beach, Spyglass and the Monterey Peninsula Country Clubs.
Its high-quality schools, both public and private, are also a draw. Bellarmine College Prep, for example, is ranked one of the top schools in the U.S., according to Mr. Ardizzone, while Santa Clara and Stanford Universities both lie within 20 minutes of the property.
